St. Vitus’ Dance is an old name for a neurological disorder in which a person experiences involuntary movements resembling a dance. In the Middle Ages, it was perceived as a mystical phenomenon, uniting ecstasy and suffering. During my Myshkin attack, this image felt especially close: the body and emotions pierced by powerful tension, almost a trance.
