POV: Counting nests at the world’s largest albatross colony! The annual nest count at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge just finished and the results are staggering: Nearly 620,000 Laysan albatross nests and just over 25,000 black-footed albatross nests. Every December for over 30 years, a dozen incredible volunteers arrive at the atoll in the middle of the Pacific Ocean to count each Laysan and black-footed albatross nest, or mōlī and ka’upu, respectively. It takes several weeks of walking
