KCCI ARCHIVE: 30 years ago today, United Airlines Flight 232 crash landed at Sioux Gateway Airport in Sioux City. The flight from Denver was headed to Chicago. As the plane was over Iowa, the tail engine exploded. Debris from the blast cut through the hydraulic lines, causing the pilots to lose flight controls. Flight 232 made it to Sioux Gateway Airport, but crashed during the landing. There were 296 people on board, 112 people were killed, but 184 survived. | KCCI
