The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids has confirmed a total of three tornadoes in Southwest and Mid-Michigan.
Nine twisters confirmed in southeast Michigan, mid-Michigan and southwest Michigan during storms Tuesday night into Wednesday.
Michigan usually averages 13 to 15 tornadoes a year, state data shows. But we’ve already had 12 twisters this year - and we’re barely into spring.
The surveys come after a line of severe storms rolled across Michigan for several hours overnight into early Wednesday.
Spring is the most active season for tornadoes in the Midwest due to specific atmospheric conditions. Most tornadoes form from rotating thunderstorms known as supercells, which are highly organized storms.
