Six months after a scathing state audit found that California had failed to track the $24 billion it spent to combat homelessness over the past half-decade, Gov. Gavin Newsom has vetoed a bill that would have required state homelessness programs to more closely monitor and report their spending.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed hundreds of bills into law this year aimed at addressing a range of key issues facing California including retail theft, consumer protection and affordable housing.

In response to rising antisemitism in the state, Newsom signed all four of the California Legislative Jewish Caucus’ priority bills into law, one of which aims to prevent “hate littering,” or the distribution of hateful flyers, posters or symbols meant to terrorize vulnerable communities.

This crucial legislation will ensure that farmworkers’ concerns about paraquat are heard and that this toxic chemical is re-evaluated,” said Assemblymember Laura Friedman, the bill’s author.

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Saturday afternoon signed a bill that will ban schools from selling Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and other snacks, candy and baked goods that contain synthetic food dye additives.

Celebrities including Jane Fonda, Shonda Rhimes and Pedro Pascal had urged Newsom to sign it, and its lead author, State Sen. Scott Weiner, says that the bill is “a light touch, commonsense measure that codifies commitments that the largest AI companies have already voluntarily made.”
