The Trump administration has extended an invitation to a group of universities to join a new agreement tied to federal education funding, The New York Times reports.

The Vaughn initiative’s funding came from Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, also known as GEAR UP, which Congress established in 1998. GEAR UP is among more than 40 education funding streams that the Trump administration in May proposed to eliminate beginning with the new federal fiscal year that starts next week.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom warned state universities that signing the Trump administration's education agreement would put them in direct conflict with his administration.

Many Washington school districts, wealthy and low-income, are struggling financially. Trevor Greene and Kelly Aramaki are bringing superintendents from around the state together to advocate for more equitable funding.

The move— which amounts to a roughly 50% cut for such research, experts calculate —also cut the maximum amount available for STEM education research grants by 85%, from $5 million to $750,000. And the NSF refocused the grants primarily on artificial intelligence, a Trump administration priority.
