Trachoma, a bacterial eye infection, has been eliminated as a public health emergency in India, according to WHO. The achievement, recognized at a regional committee meeting, marks a significant decline from five percent blindness due to Trachoma in the 1970s to less than one percent today.

World Health Organization has now recognised that India has successfully eliminated trachoma, a bacterial infection that affects the eyes, as a public health problem.

India was honored by the WHO for eliminating trachoma, following Nepal and Myanmar. Other recognitions included Bhutan for achieving cervical cancer interim targets, Maldives and Sri Lanka for Hepatitis B control,
