Tropical Storm Imelda was nearly a hurricane on Tuesday morning, and the storm has made the long-anticipated turn away from the United States. Bermuda may not be so lucky however, and is facing the possibility of a direct hit from Imelda on Wednesday.
Hurricane Imelda formed on Tuesday as it moved away from Florida and the Bahamas with a path that could make a direct hit on Bermuda, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Imelda had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (110 kph) and was moving northeast at 7 mph (11 kph). It was forecast to become a hurricane on Tuesday morning and spin out to open ocean, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Imelda has become a hurricane as it moves away from the Bahamas, the National Hurricane Center announced Tuesday. Located about 735 miles west-southwest of Bermuda, Imelda is moving toward the northeast at 7 mph.
Tropical Storm Imelda is strengthening and is expected to become a hurricane by Tuesday as it moves off the Southeast coast, kicking up dangerous surf, rip currents, coastal flooding and beach erosion from Florida through the Carolinas.
CLEVELAND — At only 21 square miles, Bermuda is a very small island in a very big ocean. Yet the island is about to get hit by back-to-back hurricanes. Tropical Storm Imelda formed Sunday and is expected to become a hurricane off the U.S. East Coast early next week.
